PARMA, Ohio — The busy State Road post office has been closed for a week after a pickup truck crashed through its entrance Oct. 7.

“Dispatch received a call of a car that went into the post office,” Parma Police Sgt. John Porec said. “The black Nissan Frontier was driven by an elderly male.

“They received a second call that there was a lot of smoke and the driver may be hurt. The caller, as he drove by, said there was too much smoke to see the vehicle inside of the post office.

“The driver of the vehicle was not hurt, but there was also a pedestrian inside the post office. The middle-aged man had trauma to his leg. He was transported to Metro(Health Medical Center), but they were non-life-threatening injuries.”

The police determined that the elderly male driver hit the gas instead of the brake. That caused the pickup truck to strike a yellow parking post on the exterior sidewalk of the post office.

From there, the Frontier went into the front glass exterior of the building, striking the pedestrian and an interior wall before stopping.

“This happens quite a few times; it’s a common occurrence,” Porec said. “In fact, this happened last year at the same exact post office.

“It wasn’t to the same extent, but a car went into the building. Nobody was injured the last time, just property damage.”

The Parma driver from the recent incident was charged with lack of reasonable control.

“The biggest thing is put your car in park” right away when parking at the post office, Porec said.

As for the State Road post office, it’s currently closed until repairs are completed.
