OSCEOLA COUNTY, MI – A motorist pulled a unconscious teen from a crashed pickup truck minutes before it was engulfed in flames, sheriff’s deputies said.

The injured 17-year-old was flown from the scene in Osceola County by Aero Med helicopter to Munson Medical Center in Traverse City. He suffered head injuries and was in stable condition.

The crash was reported at 9:18 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 3, on Fifth Avenue north of 22 Mile Road in Osceola County’s Marion Township.

Sheriff’s deputies said that a couple who live in the area stopped when they saw a GMC Sierra pickup truck, its engine compartment on fire, crashed against a tree. While his wife called 911, a 54-year-old man pulled the teen from the pickup truck.

Other motorists stopped to help pull the teen to safety before fire engulfed the vehicle.

“He did not suffer any injuries related to the fire due to the quick action of the passerby,” the Sheriff’s Department said on its Facebook page.

The investigation showed that the 17-year-old driver was going south on Fifth Avenue when he struck a deer in the road. His pickup truck then left the road and crashed into a large tree.

It was not known if hitting the deer caused the truck to leave the road or the driver swerved in an attempt to avoid hitting the deer.

The investigation continues.

State police, Marion Township firefighters and Missaukee County EMS assisted at the scene.
